Remembering Childhood

A fairy is beside me,
her touch warm on my skin,
a dragon is beneath me,
and a giant nearby him.
A unicorn is drinking
in a warm and misty pond,
and a little frog is sitting
on a lily frond.
A distant flute is playing
to a gay and happy song,
while a modest dwarf starts dancing
and sings quietly along.
A talking wolf is howling,
while a little girl in red
is skipping off to grandma
who is waiting sick in bed.
A boy has climbed a beanstalk,
and a girl’s left for a ball,
a fairy godmother,
is waving last of all.
I smile in my sleep
as the things of pleasant dreams
come circling around me
and embrace my childhood themes.
